According to a NW Missouri Genealogical Society Newsletter, the
suffixes to German surnames often contain clues to the regional origin
of that surname; "bach" from southwest Germany; "burg" from throughout
Germany; "haus" from Westphalia; "ecke" from Hesse and Thuringia;
"ingen" from Baden and Wurttenberg; "inske" from Upper Silesia; "reuth"
from Bavaria; and "ski" and "zje" from east Pomerania. (Of course, that
doesn't help me out much with my "Hon" and "Braun" lines.)
