Clara May Hillyard saved many clippings from local papers. Here's the
year-end summary of events of December 1914, which she saved and glued
into her scrapbook.

S. Roy Stokes shot while hunting. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gibbs celebrate
birthday and wedding anniversary. Newell Arnold and Hugh Veatch buy
harness shop of John H. Boyer & Co. Old Fiddlers Contest. Marriage of
Elijah Arbaugh and Miss Jessie Spillman in Springfield. James
Lauderbach, 68 years old, killed by Big Four train near Gossett.

Marriage of Miss Mary John Eastwood and John Wheatcroft at Grayville.
Flower mill of Henry Speer and F.M. Downen burned at Perverns, Ohio. C.
M. Barnes and family and Dr. Daniel Berry leave for Riverside, Calif.
for the winter. Dr. Frank Sibley takes Scottish Rites degrees at East
St. Louis. Death of Mrs. Margaret Spring at Grayville. New county
officers take charge. Herman Cochran has wrist broken from kick of
automobile crank. Captain Porter writes of visit to Bureau of Engraving
& Printing and visit to see the president. Aunt Betsy Storey 102 years
old. White County Democrat gets out big Christmas editions. Children's
letters to Santa Claus. Wedding of Miss Flossie M. Yeager and John
Johnson at Crossville. L.O. Cleveland announces closing-out sale at
Crossville to move to Mt. Carmel. Superintendent Smith of L & N Railroad
appointed to succeed Mr. Logsdon.

Annual Christmas dinner of Annie Conger Memorial Society. White County
Mid-Winter Teachers' Meeting has large attendance. Paul Kennett and
Bert York arrested on burglary charge. Christmas song service at
Presbyterian church. The National Bank issues Christmas savings checks.

Twelve-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Poshard of Heralds Prairie
loses left arm from accidental discharge of shotgun. Leslie Walker
arrested for passing forged checks. Wedding of Sim Soules and Miss Edith
Shaines in Evansville. Death of Mrs. Betty Caldwell at Enfield. Thomas
Holderby Jr. and Mrs. Ida Pyle married and leave on wedding trip to
Chicago.

Death of Mrs. George A. Ridgway at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. A.
Rodenberg, in East St. Louis. Special program Christian Endeavor
Society at Springerton Christian Church. Forty thousand dollar fire at
Maunie burns Maunie Mercantile Co. building, stock, bank, post office,
Young's bakery, Andrew Brown's new brick building and W. C. Smith's
warehouse.
